An average of 1,000 Colorado teens give birth each year, and many are at-risk of dropping out of high school. In fact, the number one reason girls drop out of high school is due to teen pregnancy. Furthermore, 78 percent of children born to a teenage mother who does not graduate, ends up living in poverty. Florence Crittenton Services aims to make a positive impact on those numbers by serving pregnant and parenting teenage mothers.
In 2013, Florence Crittenton High School served 215 pregnant and parenting teenage mothers from the ages 14 to 21. Eighty-two percent of those students improved in reading, language, and math. Florence Crittenton Services helped 88 percent of senior mothers graduate high school, which is more than double of the national average of 40 percent. Sixty percent of those Florence Crittenton students will also be the first in their family to graduate high school.
In addition, Florence Crittenton Services served 128 infants and toddlers in the 2013 school year, and 90 percent of those children who attended the Early Learning Center were at or above expected developmental levels. Supported members also included 50 fathers, and 304 extended family members.
Another non profit organization is changing the game of a prevalent issue in society.
